Meridian Voice Mail Replaced on May 19

Meridian Voice Mail was replaced with a new voice mail service -- called U-M Voice Mail -- on May 19.

This replacement does not affect Centrex Meridian users (those with 998-xxxx telephone numbers); they should continue to use the 998-6280 Meridian access number. Also, Message Center users (those who dial 6-5000 to access their mailboxes) and Hospital CallPilot users are not affected by the replacement.

U-M Voice Mail is much like Meridian since it uses the same access numbers and phone commands. These similarities should make the transition a smooth one, although there will be a few differences.

Changes you can expect with U-M Voice Mail

• Mailboxes are the 10-digit phone number (area code plus 7 digits).
• Temporary passwords are 1-2 followed by the 10-digit phone number.
• For security, passwords must be changed on first log in.
• New passwords must be a minimum of 4 digits. Passwords should not be your phone number, 1111, 2222, 1234, or other common sequence.
• Meridian messages and some personal settings (for example, greetings and distribution lists) cannot be transferred with the cutover.

What to do at your first log in to U-M Voice Mail

• Dial the access number for your area:
  • Ann Arbor Campus: 6-2500 (734-936-2500)
  • Dearborn Campus: 3-5312 (313-593-5312)
  • Flint Campus: 2-3323 (810-762-3323)

• For the first few weeks, there will be a temporary greeting that will say: "Welcome to U-M Voice Mail. If this is your first login, your temporary password is one, two, and your 10-digit phone number, beginning with the area code. Call ITCom Customer Service at (76)3-2000 if you have any problems."

• Next you will hear the prompt: "Mailbox?"
  If you are at your office phone, when you hear the prompt, press #.
  If you are at another phone, when you hear the prompt, enter your 10-digit phone number and press #.

• Then you will hear the prompt: "Password?"
  Enter your temporary password -- 1-2 and your 10-digit phone number and press #.

• The next prompt will indicate that you need to change your password.
  • Press 8 then 4 to get to the menu for changing your password.
  • Your "old" password at this point is your temporary password (1-2 plus 10-digit phone number).
  • Your new password is what you want it to be. It must be at least 4 digits long and should not be your phone number or a common sequence.
  • You will be asked to enter your new password twice followed by #.
  • If you are sent back to the main menu because you entered an invalid new password, press 8 then 4 to try again.

• Next, you will want to record your external greeting and your personal verification. Press 8 then 2 and follow the prompts.

• After your password, greeting, and personal verification are set up, you can use U-M Voice Mail just like Meridian. See U-M Voice Mail User Guide.

• If you used Custom Operator Assistant in Meridian, that number will transfer to U-M Voice Mail at the cutover. If you used distribution lists in Meridian, these will need to be set up again. See the User Guide for instructions.

If your Message Waiting Indicator is lit, you will want to check for unread messages in your old and new mailboxes. Messages left in your old (Meridian) mailbox will still be available for two weeks after the cutover (May 20-June 4). Dial (64)7-0031 or 734-647-0031 for Dearborn/Flint campuses. Log in with your old Meridian password (not your new U-M Voice Mail password -- unless they are the same).

Please note: Your Message Waiting Indicator may remain lit after you have checked both systems for unread messages. Users with single line sets can lift the handset and dial *82 (star-8-2) to extinguish the light. Users with electronic sets should call ITCom Customer Service for assistance.
