UMnet Backbone Network Distribution Layer Switches

The UMnet Backbone is comprised of two layers—the Core and the Distribution Layer. The Distribution Layer includes one or two Distribution Layer Switches (DLSs) that are used to extend the backbone core to a campus building. The DLSs provide a point of connection for the building's Access Layer (local switches/networks). The DLSs are maintained and operated by UMnet Administration.

The DLSs in the initial design (2002) were funded by ITCom equity and their upgrades were to be funded by the local unit. Since the DLS has become integral to the provision of reliable backbone network service, the UM Network Working Group recommended in 2007 that their replacement be done in a planned, systematic manner and that the associated costs be built into the UMnet Backbone access fee. This recommendation was approved and the replacement plan and associated funding model change will begin in FY09. The plan and funding model are described in Distribution Layer Switch Upgrade.
