Off-Campus Backbone ConnectionsThis service provides Units and Departments at the University of Michigan with a connection to one of three central networks, which interconnect them to the Internet, other computing services, and other Departments and Units on campus. There are various types and speeds of connections, from which a department may select.
Selecting a ConnectionThe type of connection you may be able to use will depend on your location, type of Telephone Company facilities to your location, and the distance of your location from the Ann Arbor Campus. Supported ProtocolsThere are four supported protocols that are routed over the Backbone which you may use to collaborate with others, these protocols are Internet Protocol (IP), AppleTalk, Novell's Internet Packet Exchange (IPX), and Banyan VINES IP. Orders, Rates, and InstallationTo request a new Backbone connection, contact the Project Manager for your Department or Unit.
