DRAFT: Arbor Lakes Data Center Network Attachment
University schools, colleges and departments may install and operate their own machines
in the Arbor Lakes data center. Access to the
space is provided by IT Central Services UMCE. Contact UMCE to make arrangements for access
to space.
Network service is provided by IT Central Services ITCom.
For units that attach their LANs to the UMnet backbone (provided by ITCom) service is available in
two models.
The unit may attach their machines to an ITCom provided distribution switch on a per port basis or
the unit may have a distribution switch attached that is for their sole use.
Individual Station Attachments in Arbor Lakes Data Center
In this model, machines in the data center may attach to an ITCom provided distribution switch. This configuration is
effective for smaller installations. Since there will also be other unit's equipment on this switch
the unit will be sharing network bandwidth, to a degree, with other units.
ITCom Responsibilities
- Provide and install a LAN port which is attached to UMnet
- Provide and install one station cable per LAN port, extended to the units machine location
- Support and maintain all ITCom provided equipment in a fashion similar to that of a
backbone router port (See UMnet
Backbone Service Agreement)
- Performance of the connections is as described in the UMnet Backbone SA
- Provide one UMnet IP address per machine
Unit Responsibilities
- Acquire access, space, rack(s), electrical power, etc. directly from IT Central Services UMCE
- Install machines
- Operate machines on the network as described in the UMnet Backbone SA
- Provide contact information as described in the UMnet Backbone SA
- Do not run multiple machines off of individual attachments

Backbone Network Attachment in Arbor Lakes Data Center
In this model, the unit selects and purchases a distribution switch from those that ITCom supports.
ITCom will install, operate and maintain
the switch. The units may use the ports on the distribution switch as desired.
This configuration is effective for larger installations.
ITCom Responsibilities
- Extend two 1Gbps Ethernet links to the distribution switch in the units "cage"
- Operate, support and maintain the distribution switch and all ITCom provided equipment
as described in the
UMnet Backbone SA
- Performance of the connections is as described in the UMnet Backbone SA
- Provide a group of UMnet IP addresses as requested via the
Network
Information Change Request (NICR) form
