Electronic Library Resource Access Work Around

The University Library subscribes to many online databases that are restricted to university members by IP address. Some database service providers have not updated their access lists to recognize the new address space as belonging to U-M since the subnet was installed on August 5, 2008. The University Library is aware of the issue, and is working with the service providers to permit access.

The database at ISI Web of Knowledge is one that has not updated their access list, and there may be others. Users who can't reach these resources may do one of two things to work around this problem:

  1. Install the Cisco VPN client and use the ITCom campus VPN service.

The "UM-on-campus-wireless" profile should be used. This gives the client machine an apparent address that is recognized by all of the Library's partners.

  2. The Library runs a web proxy service that provides direct access to the University Library's resources.

Firefox users can get the Firefox plug-in.

Other possibilities which should work through the proxy server are:

Users can go to Ask a Librarian for help.
