Internet2 Definitions

Term Definition
ATM Asynchronous Transfer Mode. A networking technology that allows the control of certain link parameters called QOS.
ATM call setup ATM is connection oriented. At session initiation, call setup occurs in which the end stations and intervening switch set up a path and agree on link parameters such as peak data rate, burst size, etc.
Commodity Internet The current general use network which people think of as the "Internet."
DS-1 A data link operating at 1.544 Mbps.
DS-3 A data link operating at 44.736 Mbps.

Internet2 Follow-on to Internet1.
MREN Metropolitan Research and Education Network.
NAP Network Access Point. An interconnection point for multiple networks. The Internet consists of multiple interconnected NAPs.
OC-1 A SONET link operating at 51.84 Mbps.
OC-3 A SONET link operating at 155.52 Mbps. It consists of 3 OC-1 links multiplexed together.
OC-12 A SONET link operating at 622.08 Mbps. It consists of 4 OC-3 links multiplexed together.
PVC Permanent Virtual Circuit. A type of ATM link between two end stations that is statically defined, usually by manual configuration. The PVC is the means by which QOS parameters are defined.
QOS Quality Of Service. A set of link parameters such as bandwidth, delay, delay variance (delay jitter), etc.
RSVP Resource reSerVation Protocol. An Internet protocol that allows applications to make QOS requests.
vBNS very-high-speed Backbone Network Service (don't ask me why the v is lower case).
SONET Synchronous Optical NETwork. A standard method of interconnecting data communications equipment at multiples of the OC-1 rate (typically 3, 12, 24, 48, 192).
