Who are the Operators?
The first person many callers to the University of Michigan speak to is a U-M telephone operator. The mission of Operator Services is to act as the "front door" to the University of Michigan. They greet and provide directory assistance to persons calling the U-M Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn campuses as well as the UM Hospitals and Medical Center.
U-M operators also provide other telephone services to U-M faculty, staff, and students including conference calls and operator assisted calls.
Hours of Operation
U-M operators have an occupation that is behind the scenes but very important to the University. These U-M operators are available during the hours of 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday (excluding holidays).
In addition, the U-M automated operator service provides information about U-M faculty, staff, and student telephone numbers. It is possible to access the U-M automated operator service directly at any time by calling 615-2244.
U-M Automated Operator Service
Persons seeking U-M faculty, staff, and student telephone numbers, are able to access the U-M automated operator service any time by calling 615-2244. Callers are asked to indicate whether the person they are trying to reach is a U-M faculty, staff or student and to clearly speak the name of the person. The service responds with the telephone number and gives the caller the option of being directly transferred to that number. There is no charge for this service.
The U-M automated operator service is able to recognize more than 500,000 names and this continues to grow as new names and pronunciations are added. Problems with mispronounced or missing names can be reported by calling 647-5477 and leaving your name and telephone number. A member of the Operator Services group will return the call and obtain the correct information.
