Telephone ServicesResidence Halls, Northwood Community Apartments, Lawyers ClubTelephone and NumberYour Telephone
If you need or want to bring your own telephone set to connect to your room/apartment telephone line, make sure it has a standard RJ-11 modular cable and jack for plugging into the room telephone outlet. To take advantage of the Caller ID feature available on all U-M telephone lines, you will need a telephone with a Caller ID display. You may also want a telephone that includes voice mail, since the University's voice mail is now an opt-in, charged-for service. (See Voice Mail for information.) If your telephone set or line is not working (no dial tone, cannot dial out), contact Telephone Repair at Your Telephone Number (734-565-XXXX)Each telephone line has a number in the 734 area code and the 565 exchange. The 565 exchange uses a dialing pattern "just like home." That is, you dial all 7 digits to reach a local or campus number. You do not need to dial a "9" to get an outside line. See Dialing Information for other instructions, including how to make long distance calls. Residence Hall and Lawyers Club Telecommunications Outlet PanelBelow each Residence Hall telephone is a telecommunications outlet panel. The top outlet is for connecting (to the phone line) a telephone device with an RJ-11 phone cable, such as a second telephone, a modem, an answering machine, a fax machine, or a caller ID display box. The bottom outlets (usually two) are for connecting computers to the Ethernet/Internet with an RJ-45 Ethernet cable. If you wish to connect a computer to one of these outlets, you need to contact ResComp (Residential Computing). Rooms in the Lawyers Club have a similar telecommunications outlet panel, but the room phone is already plugged in to the phone outlet. Northwood DSL Network ServiceAttached to the wall near each Northwood telephone is a DSL modem for connecting a computer to the Internet. The DSL modem is already activated but you will need to register your computer on the network. DSL modem instructions are in the Northwood DSL Networking Guide at Northwood DSL Network Service. Personal EquipmentYou are responsible for maintaining and repairing any personal equipment attached to the University system. Costs to repair University equipment or lines damaged by customer-provided equipment will be billed to you. |
