Wireless

Overview

The University of Michigan wireless (WiFi) network provided by ITCS is available to all who have a valid University of Michigan uniqname and UMICH Kerberos password. For detailed information about the wireless networks and locations provided by ITCS as well as other units on campus, see University of Michigan wireless network locations.

WiFi networks:

  • are short-range. You must be in a defined area where the radio signal is available; if you move out of this area, the radio signal will be too weak and you will be disconnected.

  • are shared. All devices connected to the same Access Point (AP) share the total bandwidth available from that AP.

  • do not work with cellular phones, pagers, Bluetooth, or many other wireless technologies unless the device is WiFi enabled.

  • are compatible with most IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n product (IEEE 802.11a/n is available in limited locations).

To use the wireless network provided by ITCS, choose one of the following names (Service Set Identifiers or SSIDs) when your device searches for available networks:

MWireless

MWireless is the most secure way to use the wireless network and should be used by all U-M faculty, staff and students. Before using the service, you will need to configure settings on your wireless device see Setting Up MWireless.

UM Wireless Network

UM Wireless Network should be used by U-M faculty, staff and students to obtain the software needed for MWireless access or if the device they are using does not meet 802.1x/WPA2 technical standards. UM Wireless Network should also be used by guests. To access UM Wireless Network launch a web browser then enter your user name and password.

Privacy Warning

Wireless technologies are still relatively insecure. By using UM Wireless Network you are accepting that it is possible for others within range to use an application to intercept the information you send and receive through the network. See Security & Usage Issues.
