UM Wireless Network Usage Statistics

Getting a "Blue Screen" when trying to connect to UM Wireless Network?

If your Windows laptop crashes and displays a Blue Screen with an error message, called the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), and then reboots, when trying to connect to UM Wireless Network, most likely there is a problem with the wireless driver on the laptop. This symptom may not appear at other wireless sites (your home, local Hotspots, etc.).

If the laptop has an Intel 2200bg wireless card, the wireless driver must be upgraded either with the generic Intel driver or one provided by the laptop manufacturer.

This issue is detailed and links for driver updates can be found on the Intel Corporation web site.

If the laptop does not have the Intel wireless chipset, it is still recommended that the latest wireless diver be installed.

  • Use of the name "UM Wireless Network" The SSID, "UM Wireless Network" is used to identify an enterprise campus-wide resource available to all U-M faculty, staff, and students with a valid uniqname and umich password. Users and user support staff expect the same look, feel and functionality from UM Wireless Network wherever it is available. This includes but is not limited to the login screen, bandwidth, authentication required and security provided. Variations add to user confusion and makes user support even more challenging. These needs will only intensify as roaming is enabled and new multi-mode devices are introduced into the environment.

UM Wireless Network access for University of Michigan conference and program attendees

UM Wireless Network access for conference and program attendees, see package C.

A University of Michigan unit may obtain a U-M ID and password for persons attending a U-M conference or program. This will enable the attendee to use UM Wireless Network.

A sponsoring unit assumes responsibility for the individual being sponsored, provides the funding source for the services, and acknowledges that the sponsored individual is engaged in a U-M working relationship.
